It's not just hard to see our footprints in the water,
but we can follow the heat trail.
As ecologists, we are interested in how things work in nature, and climate change brings a consequential threat to water. Questions arise: Will there be less water due to global warming? and what does it really mean... "there will be less water", when there is the same amount of water on the planet today as there ever was, since millions of years ago. Of course the elephant in the room is population. We have exploded from 1 billion to 7 in a few hundred years, but the problem with climate change is it "moves" the water patterns.
If it's not where it is expected - the water is somewhere else.
Traditionally past civilisations follow the water, they have moved with the water or perished. Modern cities cannot pack up and move so water will have to transported to where it is needed... and/or build desalination plants. Every city in Australia (except Darwin) now has a desalination plant, but recently Australia experienced wide spread flooding and rain which filled up the dams and demonstrates Nature's unpredictability.
Defining our search of inquiry, observing the path of water, we follow the 3 main states of gas, liquid and solid, and the trail of evidence water leaves in its' path. And just as the wind shapes the land, water carves a heat trail, a heat trail made by water, or the lack of water. And by the action of water moving somewhere else we observe the path of water.
Soil Carbon Sequestration is now accepted as a valid way of reducing CO2 emissions... of course the soil has been deficient in CO2 because of ironical mans' practice using artificial fertilizer - and now that we accept soil is carbon deficient - another phenomena rears it's head - soil without CO2 cannot absorb water. This is the dis-connection between the carbon cycle and the water cycle / and also the place of re-connection.
Water itself is treated as a separate issue and generally considered a casualty of global warming - an effect of heat - and no direct relationship with CO2 or fossil emissions is linked - and certainly not a driver of heat - although water vapour itself is a greenhouse gas, water is not considered a driver of heat. After all Water is the Thermoregulator of the planet, water helps regulate the planet, water is cooling... but the "lack" of water dramatically introduces heat, and this kind of heat accumulates. We "thought" as a consequence of global warming - water was to suffer - to be less - and we were resigned to a dryer planet with permanent water restrictions... but that's highly in accurate.
Now it's time to embrace the next speed bump from the ecology camp, that water is one of the main drivers of heat but indirectly. The whole picture must include the water and carbon cycles in tandem - wholistically - and at a recent symposium at Sydney University the penny dropped.
To oversimplify, there are big and small water cycles. Small can be shrubs that form a canopy that collects dew in the morning, and large is actual rain. Without a healthy small water cycle (with trees, shrubs and grasses as nature intended and unless there is plenty of rain) the land becomes dry. With no canopy to form a small water cycle eventually all the water can evaporate - after which no evaporation/dissipation/evapotranspiration can occur and there is NO cooling and heat accumulates. Heat is easily stored in massive land banks and consequently radiates back into the atmosphere heating the air. When heat is captured and well insulated, it remains "on". Heat that normally would dissipate via a shrub or tree will remain "on" for hours and well into the evening.
BECAUSE THERE IS NO SKIN.
Unless water is replenished back into the land - and plants are there to encourage the small water cycle - the land will give up it's moisture - dry out and become a heat accumulator and heat emitter - waiting for rain - and rain is looking for cooler pastures. The dry heat becomes combustable and a fire hazard - the fire policy is to clear the land of this dry mulch and it's a total catch-22. The land cannot recover because there is no small water cycle. Heat Accumulation of Land is the consequence.
To make matters worse, hot air rises and causes winds that either dry the land further and/or provide hurricanes with fuel. To really rub salt in the wound, when soil gives up its' moisture it releases its' CO2 as well... and without CO2 soil cannot absorb water, so any water that falls rolls away into the streams and rivers removing any top soil eventually washing into the ocean leaving devastation... all because we do not realize the earth needs a skin, just like everybody and everything else.
The concept of "skin" for the planet is a simple logical idea. We all have a skin, as humans we would not survive for many hours without our skin - can you think of anything that does not have a protective skin coating? The same goes for the planet. Soil by itself is vulnerable and will blow away unless it is protected by its' skin, be it grass or mulch. Observing the forest reveals the rich layer of mulch, that is not dry and combustable, but wet and drenched with moisture. This combination of moisture and nutrients feeds the trees, and is a successful natural state that Man need not change... but can observe Man has changed this dynamic by the many practices of clearing land, but more specifically removing the "skin".
Water or the lack of it is at the heart of Global Warming.
Water is the thermoregulator of the planet - the regulator of heat. Without water there is no evaporation and heat accumulates. Soil without "skin" is exposed.
Water is the natural thermoregulator of just about everything on the planet - including the planet. We are mostly water and we use water to cool us down. Ice in your drink and water in the radiator. Without water things would just heat up. Everything on the planet, your body, your car, all things require a thermoregulator, all things require water, otherwise the sun would burn us to dust.
There is just as much water on the planet today as there was when it all began - but it's changed because we have changed it... but what have we done? Well, cities have grown from necessity, and expanded quicker than technology did. Now that technology is maturing it's too late to apply to an old city, and suitable only for a new wholistec city, and in this context a city with water attractors... to naturally attract water to the city and within the city.
It's how we think about water - and how we then deal with water.
Heat accumulates s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g the heat out, what I mean by that is the sun's heat is actually "stored (time) and then released (some time) later". This some time later is extra heat, this extra heat is not yet common knowledge, is not yet included as an alternative or different cause of global warming... when it gets so hot you can fry eggs of the side-walk, that's a lot of heat. When your thirsty, the quicker I bring you water, the quicker you are refreshed... but without water you feel the effect of heat longer. Heat Accumulation is stored efficiently in the land and you, and as a consequence drives winds that dry the land further / causing further Heat Accumulation and you thirstier.
By changing the distribution of water on the planet, By removing trees, clearing land, erecting cities, we have indadvertedly changed the distribution of heat. Changing the distribution of heat on the planet, changes the wind currents, the rainfall patterns and weather. It's man-made.
This ties water and heat juxtaposed together in a way that has serious ramifications to global warming. Unaware as we are about the drying paradigm, we concentrate on mitigating carbon and CO2, oblivious to the heat produced by man's footprint in water... no wonder we cannot see it.
Solutions are found when there problem is clearly seen, hence the confirmation of water and water movement is subsidiary to how and why water moves, since development into water attractors called Water Sinks can be found at Planet Water Management.
